Required Curriculum
Which subjects, standards, programs, and instructional materials make up the required curriculum?
LTS offers instruction in the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills of the appropriate grade levels in the following required curriculum:
Kindergarten Through Fifth Grade
English Language Arts: The English Language Arts (ELA) program for grades K–5 utilizes Savvas myView Literacy as the core Tier 1 curriculum, with the Spalding Method (The Writing Road to Reading, 2012) supporting foundational literacy development and comprehension strategies in grades K-3. This integrated approach provides a comprehensive, standards-aligned program that supports mastery of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and prepares students for success with the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR).
Savvas myView Literacy delivers instruction in reading, writing, vocabulary, grammar, and speaking and listening through structured whole-group and differentiated small-group instruction. The Spalding Method provides explicit, systematic instruction in phonics, spelling, handwriting, and comprehension through daily practice. Together, these programs address the Big Five components of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension to develop proficient readers, writers, and communicators.
Mathematics: Legacy teaches enVision math to focus on mastery and practical applications of basic mathematical practices. The enVision math program focuses on deep conceptual math understanding aided by visual models, student-centered projects, and personalized learning. enVision is set up in units, where lessons will progress from introduction to more complex usage of a concept. Through lessons, activities, assessments, textbooks/workbooks, and technology, students become prepared for real-world experiences and accountability testing. Mathematical practices are covered in-depth and give students enhanced opportunities to engage in math problem-solving skills.
Science: The Savvas Texas Science Experience offers a TEKS-aligned program emphasizing phenomenon-based and hands-on learning. This curriculum empowers students to develop a robust understanding of scientific principles through active exploration and laboratory experiments, engaging students in critical thinking and decision-making activities tailored to their grade levels. The curriculum encourages students to explore and understand scientific concepts deeply, with interactive tools and technology integrated to enhance learning and engagement. Additionally, students apply mathematical concepts to analyze, summarize, and communicate findings from investigations and experiments.
Interactive note-taking and assigned readings further support knowledge retention and comprehension, fostering a comprehensive and engaging approach to science education that prioritizes hands-on learning and real-world applications.
Social Studies: LTS utilizes a TEKS-based social studies curriculum. The social studies program, Social Studies Weekly, is a K–6 program that’s developmentally appropriate for each grade level. The topics begin with what students learn and like to do at school, then progress to learning about the community, state, and country, as well as global expansion and understanding. Students demonstrate their knowledge in a variety of ways in each daily lesson to ensure mastery and growth aligned to the specific grade-level TEKS and state-testing. Students use magazines and articles to foster their comprehension of the social studies topics throughout the school year.
Art: Students utilize a variety of media and techniques to create art projects that emulate historical and contemporary significant artists and art styles. Students learn essential art vocabulary as well as the basics of art history, the elements of art, and principles of design. Legacy teaches art using The Art of Education University’s FLEX Curriculum to meet the needs of the state standards for visual arts education.
Technology Applications: Legacy introduces students to the basics of computer use, keyboarding, and cyber-safety, as well as the application of various software programs for academic purposes.
Music: General music class utilizes the Texas QuaverMusic curriculum. Students sing, play instruments, listen to music, and move to music. Grade-level music performances occur throughout the school year.
Mozart Performing Arts™ Program: The Mozart Performing Arts Program provides students in grades 3-6 with high-quality music classes for multiple days of the week. It exposes students to music theory, music ensemble, and general music class with an emphasis on vocal technique, music literacy, and music history. Mozart Performing Arts Program students may need to provide their own instrument. (Program offerings may vary by campus and grade level.)
Physical Education: Physical education (P.E.) class provides instruction on physical skills and wellness concepts in order to promote health, fitness, and lifelong involvement in physical activities. In the event of medical necessity, students may be excused from physical activity in P.E. class for up to two days per grading period with a parent note. Anything exceeding two days requires a note from a healthcare professional. Students who are excused from physical activity may earn their daily participation points by completing a written assignment in class.
Momentum Fitness™ Program: The Momentum Fitness Program provides students with high-quality physical education classes four days per week, during which they will increase overall physical fitness and develop sport-specific skills. Students will develop the five essential core fitness components: muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, cardiovascular strength, and body composition. Additionally, students will improve sportsmanship and learn sport-specific skills, rules, and the many health benefits of playing sports. (Program offerings may vary by campus and grade level.)
Sixth Grade
Mathematics: Legacy teaches enVision math to focus on mastery and practical applications of basic mathematical practices. The enVision math program focuses on deep conceptual math understanding aided by visual models, student-centered projects, and personalized learning. enVision is set up in units, where lessons will progress from introduction to more complex usage of a concept. Through lessons, activities, assessments, textbooks/workbooks, and technology, students become prepared for real-world experiences and accountability testing. Mathematical practices are covered in-depth and give students enhanced opportunities to engage in math problem-solving skills.
Seventh Through Eighth Grade
Mathematics: enVision Mathematics makes math relevant to students, helping them see how it works for them in their everyday lives. Students experience mathematics with visual models, animations, graphing, and student-centered projects. The use of calculators occurs only when directed by the teacher. Specific courses (Math 8, Algebra 1, or Geometry) are assigned based on a placement test and prerequisite courses.
Sixth Through Eighth Grade
English Language Arts: LTS utilizes Savvas myPerspectives ELA curriculum for sixth through eighth grade English Language Arts. myPerspectives ELA integrates a reading-writing connection throughout the curriculum. In conjunction with ample writing process exposure and varying writing styles, students practice grammar, listening, and speaking skills within each unit’s focused writing mode.
Science: The Texas Science Experience, supported by Savvas, offers a Texas state standards-aligned program specifically designed for 6th to 8th graders, emphasizing phenomenon-based and hands-on learning. This curriculum helps students build a strong understanding of scientific principles through active exploration and laboratory experiments, engaging them in critical thinking and decision-making activities suitable for their age group. Focusing on real-world phenomena, the program encourages students to deeply explore and understand scientific concepts, enhanced by interactive tools and technology. Students apply math to analyze, summarize, and communicate findings from their investigations and experiments. Interactive note-taking and assigned readings support knowledge retention and comprehension, creating a comprehensive and engaging science education that prioritizes hands-on learning and real-world applications for middle school students.
Social Studies: The social studies curriculum utilizes the state standards-based social studies curriculum sources, Social Studies Weekly (sixth grade), HMH Texas History (seventh grade) and Texas United States History (eighth grade). Students in seventh grade will understand traditional historical points of reference in Texas history from its earliest beginnings. This includes in-depth knowledge of the significant individuals, events, and issues that played key roles in Texas statehood, as well as the state's economy, government, culture, and elements of citizenship. Students in eighth grade engage in the details of United States History and explore historical points from the colonial beginnings, the English Colonies, the American Revolution, and everything that comes with forming a new nation, such as forming government; citizenship and the Constitution; expansion; times of war and civil unrest; reconstruction; and everything in between.
Electives: Junior high students have the opportunity to select from a variety of electives each semester. Electives are designed to contribute to the well-rounded education of LTS students. Contact your campus for a complete list of the electives offered.
