Recitation of the Declaration of Independence
What do students learn and recite during Celebrate Freedom Week?
For all public schools in Texas, the week of September 17 is designated as “Celebrate Freedom Week.” During that time, social studies classes will provide instruction concerning the intent, meaning, and importance of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution, and students in grades 3 and above will recite a portion of the text of the Declaration of Independence.
A student will be exempted from this requirement if a parent provides a written statement requesting that the student be excused, LTS determines that the student has a conscientious objection to the recitation, or the parent is a representative of a foreign government to whom the United States extends diplomatic immunity.
